Mt.  Mageik  And  Bald  Eagle

Looking south-east from the beach in front of Brooks Camp, snow-covered Mt. Mageik rises above the forest. Our local bald eagle (an immature) cooperatively posed on a piece of driftwood on the sandy island in the lake just off-shore. Mageik, altitude 7250 feet,  is one of at least six active volcanoes in Katmai National Park. The most recent major eruption in what is now the park was that of Novarupta, a volcano that erupted in 1912 and covered much of southern Alaska with ash.
