Travel to Katmai is by float plane from King Salmon, a small town near the coast. We flew from Anchorage to the King Salmon airport in a turboprop airplane and then transferred by van to the river where we boarded the float plane. Scroll down to read the story----
After a short and smooth flight we saw Naknek Lake (to the left in the image below and curving around the mountain):
and immediately landed. Another plane was in process of taking off:
Fortunately, there were friendly baggage handlers available to take our luggage:
but we managed to get ourselves and our luggage ashore with only human help. Then up to the lodge where we would get our meals:
