Yours truly

a gray whale with a zodiac in the background

Here is a whale with another one of the ship's zodiacs in the background. The whale's head and body are under water (he's swimming on his side), and all we see is a tail fluke (left) and a flipper (right). The perspective is confusing here, but the whale is about three times as long (i.e., 30 feet) as the zodiac is wide.  These grays seemingly ignored our boats completely but they never came up under one, so there were no capsizes. Most of the whales were solitary, but there were a couple of mothers with calves. This is in Bahia Magdalena, one of the chief birthing lagoons for the California gray.
